Can I be sure of my new life with God?

Perhaps you prayed a prayer and "accepted Jesus as your Savior," but are you sure that you are saved from sin? Can we really know for sure?

First John 5:13 says, "I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life." That verse says "that you may know," it doesn't say, "so you can wonder if you have eternal life." God desires that you know for sure! If you were standing before God and He asked you why He should let you into heaven, what would you say?

God loves you and wants you to know the answer. John 3:16 says, "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life." The Bible is clear that all have sinned (Romans 3:23) and the punishment for sin is death. God sent His Son Jesus to die for our sins. When we believe in Him, we can be assured of our salvation (Acts 16:31).

When God saves us, we become His children. The Bible says that God doesn't let His children go. They are His children for eternity. "My sheep listen to my voice. I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they will never die. No one can steal them out of my hand. My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than anyone. No one can steal them out of my Father's hand" (John 10:27-29).

When you begin to doubt your salvation, remind yourself that you are a new creation because of Jesus death on the cross for you. "What I'm about to tell you is true. Anyone who hears my word and believes him who sent me [Jesus] has eternal life. He will not be found guilty. He has crossed over from death to life" (John 5:24).
