Tim and Lyn Newbrander

Tim and Lyn joined ISI in 2012 to begin reaching out to the over 16,000 international students and scholars in Philadelphia. During their 11 years in Philly, they touched literally thousands of students from 86 countries, utilizing their beautiful Victorian home as a “House for All Nations.” For 10 years, they also were a homestay for about 100 young men who were learning English. Many students began to think of Tim and Lyn as their American dad and mom. Having lived abroad for 22 years in three different countries with three different languages, they know first-hand the challenges students face in a new culture and for most, operating in a second language.
In 2023, their home became too small to accommodate the number of students attending weekly get togethers in their home (Friday Night Connection), while becoming too cumbersome to maintain for just the two of them. As they looked to the future, they realized that there were several Delaware universities without significant outreach to international students. They began praying about how downsizing could lead to expansion of their work and ministry to a new group of international students in Delaware. They moved to the Newark area in 2024, winding up their work in Philadelphia in 2025. Their ministry to students involves both Word and deed: planning cultural activities for international students, finding practical help in the many adjustments international students need to make, talking one on one with students about the stuff of life and faith, and involving interested students in Bible studies.
Tim is a graduate of Wheaton College (BA), University of Illinois Chicago Circle (MSW) and Westminster Seminary (MDiv). He is ordained in the PCA. Lyn studied at Columbia International University (BS) and taught English in Japan before marrying Tim in 1982. She has her MA in Teaching English from Calvin College and has taught English in a variety of settings. Together they served for many years in the Netherlands and in Germany. The Newbranders have three adult children.
